Why sungrown weed is a part of history and critical to our future?
Let’s just say the evolution of the industry has been interesting? I think we can say that. From hash and marijuana smugglers of the 70s and 80s to the indoor growers from Vancouver Island to Sunshine Coast to the Kootenays. The fellas pack 'n gas across east coast lines. These people generated an industry against all odds. So before I start my tirade on what makes current sungrown weed so good.
Let’s tip our hats, maybe even a little moment of silence... to the underground. To the mother business. To every hustler flip 'n packs. To every trimmer, every truck driver, every grow store employee with all the hooks… every baby maker, every clone delivery person, all the dime baggers. This one’s to you, cheers and thank you.
A salute to the past, the good, the bad, while we reward the authentic in the present. Let’s not whitewash our past into some modern box, driven by some ‘c-class’ and their ‘CPG’ agendas. To all the vampires, the takers trying to fulfill green rush dreams, good riddance. Please go create your next get rich scheme with your AI investors pitch deck. To better days ahead for the OGs (original growers) and our industry as a whole. Let’s go.
Why is there a lack of sungrown offerings in the Canadian market?
In their infinite wisdom, Health Canada didn’t allow outdoor cultivation until much later in the legalization process. By this time, vampire-like public companies had invested billions of dollars into their greenhouse business model, and actually lobbied the government, claiming it was unfair to allow outdoor cultivation. This influx of corporate cash put small outdoor operations on their back foot, without the resources to get their products to market.
It’s fair to say there’s agreement now across the board that the white-shoe money and backroom dealing was an unnecessary kick in the teeth to the industry.
Grow styles don’t lead to the quality of flower, experience does.
Yes, the best grower in the world can grow the best weed indoors. (With 100% climate controlled rooms and every type of technology and data point at their disposal). Cool, we’ve seen it for years now. In Canada we have a lack of understanding and the labeling of the different types of grow styles and their benefits is muddy at best.
Too many people think that growing style is a direct correlation to product quality but that simply is not the case. Big tech doesn’t equal quality. Just like anything else in the world, experience is the main driver to producing a quality product. A new jack grower won’t even know how to set up a grow room, let alone knock out quads (craft flowers). The insane amount of the facilities that have shut down, where suits dropped tens of millions on their green-rush dream to only recoup 10 cents on the dollar is a clear example of how important experience is in our industry.
Better-Defined cannabis grow styles.
Indoor Craft Weed:
Is in rooms that are x size, 16-32 lights, 100% climate controlled, small batch, proper cure process (hang dried) and hand trimmed. This is small batch, craft flower.
Greenhouse Weed:
Makes up the majority of what we see on Canada shelves, massive facilities have either been updated or built from scratch to grow weed
Sungrown Weed:
Is outdoors using the power of the sun, not heating or secondary lighting used, it's all mother nature.
Why quality differs:
Large scale:
One of the most abused, misappropriated words in our industry is “craft”. If someone is doing a million Sq Ft of greenhouse this is not “craft”. That’s Budweiser calling its beer “craft brewed”. It’s Nike calling its shoes “handmade”. Just don’t do it
Poor cure:
As public companies championed messaging to their investors that Sq Ft equals valuation, the infrastructure for curing and properly finishing product often wasn’t even built into the floor plans… oops!
Concealed in basements for generations, sungrown’s poised for new opportunities.
Our industry craftwork has been hidden in the basement across North America for generations, creating a robust industry of picks and shovels to emulate the sun and climate to grow weed.
Sungrown cultivation is a whole different ball game. We embrace the sun, pull from the same old toolkit and lean heavily on experience. It’s small farming. It’s weather-dependent. It’s hard, sometimes unpredictable work. But it’s what we do and fuck we love it.
The history of sungrownand origin of land raised strains.
The history of original land-raised strains – Hindu Kush, Afghan, Columbian Gold etc – and sungrown cultivation in places like Afghanistan goes back thousands of years. These strains came to North America with traditions and hard-earned knowledge, and landed in places like Humboldt in the US and Kootenay in Canada. Sungrown weed cultivation is entrenched in our culture and we celebrate it.
The history of sungrown and origin of land raised strains.
California always gets the recognition for, well, everything good and sunny in North America. But where weed is concerned, it shouldn’t be the gold standard anymore. Considering the brief history lesson above, the climates in Afghanistan are more similar to Osoyoos than they are to notorious weed-growing havens further south. The Okanagan, where we grow, is the only desert-like climate in Canada. We’re taking it back to the mega-old school.
Why
sungrown weed?
Low environmental impact
The average winter temperature in Canada is -10C and the ideal temperature to grow cannabis is between 26-30C. So for comparison: think about heating your house in winter… then, run the heat up to make it a sweat box where you're wearing shorts out of necessity and walking around bare-chested … now realize your house is built out of single pane glass. Then imagine doing this at 1000X the scale and think about that electrical output. It’s enough to make you puke.
Cultivation Cost
Cultivation cost is incredibly economical, relying on the sun for light & energy vs gas & electricity in Canada makes a massive difference in the cost per gram.
High Terpene Production
Natural sunlight simply develops a truer and more dynamic terpene profile. If you believe your high is not just about THC, then Sungrown is for you.
Embrace the sun, relying on time tested techniques, a premium sungrown offering
We’re on our fourth harvest, reaching deep into a toolkit that’s older than the internet, harvesting weed in the only (perfect) desert environment in Canada. Flash freezing in the fields allows us to time everything perfectly, preserving all of those lovely sungrown attributes. We then fulfill each order from frozen brought through our curing process to bring you fresh sungrown weed all year.
Why support independent BC farms?
We recognize that about 80% of flowers on the market are now being pushed by a handful of publicly traded companies. “Buy Local” should be the mantra when finding weed, not the exception. When has “bigger” ever meant “better”? Our goal is to support independent farms and growers that keep money in local communities in Canada. Farms run by real people with real experience and no dwindling public company stock options.
Primo’s sungrown mantra
We believe that sungrown should be the primary way the world adopts our beautiful plant.
Our craft has been hidden in the basement for decades but now it’s time for us to show the world a model that is sustainable and benefits local communities.
